Personal Power
Peter Senge
Personal Power is not about controlling anyone or anything. It is the interaction of the various thought processes of your personality that allows your true self to shine through. Personal power is the willingness to make the choice of self-discovery and choose which reality you wish to foster and activate in your life.
It is a choice to take control of the self by identifying emotions, actions and reactions to build strength and confidence with a deeper meaning to one's life. Personal Power is an attitude and state of mind that takes discipline and practice in order to achieve true wisdom.
Carlos Castaneda wrote in "Journey to Ixtlan", "It doesn't matter how one was brought up. What determines the way one does anything is personal power."
Spiritual Psychology
World religions, philosophers and notable psychologists have sought to explore the relationships between the mind, body and soul. Transpersonal or Spiritual Psychology is a way to awaken the triad of your being. It is a way in which to bridge the gap between the emotional and spiritual selves for overall health and healing. Spiritual psychology explores the range of human potential as it relates to aspects of the soul.
In a world of complex relationships, knowing the wisdom of the self is the most critical because it is the pivotal point that all other interpersonal dynamics are based. Becoming aware of the roots of dysfunctional patterns creates emotional changes which releases the negative charges associated with it. You can rescript your life so the light of the true self shines through. Becoming aware of life patterns brings peace and healing to the heart and soul.
I should mention that Spiritual Psychology also encompasses the exploration of traumas and unresolved issues from previous lifetimes. These reactive patterns, often called Karma, always attract the same energy signature of people and situations. Awareness of past lives can be valuable in relieving and transmuting dysfunctional behaviors.
In psychology, Sigmund Freud personified the human mind into three divisions; the Id, Ego and Super Ego. These three elements exchange dynamics which constitute Life Dramas in all relationships with others and within us. The constant conflict of these aspects causes anxiety and unhappiness. Such internal conflicts can also become manifest as a physical diseasement with various symptoms of aches, pains and physical reactions to people, places and situations. The Id, Ego and Super Ego are not separate structures of the mind but are merely elements of the one mind. They operate on different levels of consciousness and function in a continuous movement among the layers of being.
One cannot separate any part of the mind from the other. The objective is to be aware of the emotions and actions that each aspect of the mind represents. Awareness of the self is key to understanding the interactions of the mind. A brief outline of the levels of mind are:
ID
- Characterized by desiring
- Ruled by the pleasure principle
- Operates as the unconscious mind
- Most primitive, innate, instinctual motivational forces
- Wants immediate satisfaction
- Urges control motivation
- Indirect symbolic representation, association
- Retains memory of the end result of an action
Ego
- Characterized by Reasoning
- Ruled by reality principle
- Operates as the conscious sense of self
- Strategizes to gain desires and urges
- Learns skills, uses memories and experiences
- Uses defense mechanisms to aid repression of desires and urges
- Controls functions of sensation, feeling, thinking, intuition
- Social control, values, rules, acceptable behavior
- Individual becomes aware of itself
- Balances primitive needs with morals and taboos
SuperEgo
- Characterized by Spirited qualities
- Conscious of right and wrong
- Pride and self-satisfaction
- Uses guilt and self reproach to enforce rules
- Moral agent linking subconscious and conscious minds
- Part of the unconscious mind of learned experiences
- Holds primitive child based perceptions

You will discover the constant interaction among these functions that determine your behavioral responses and your personal and worldly perceptions. The range of human potential is based upon layers of external conditioned realities that are derived from childhood perceptions. Our perceptions thus change due to experiences and likewise, experiences are tied to a world of complex emotions, survival strategies and life dramas. Since most of our issues are caused by realities and truths formed during childhood, our perceptions become based on emotions that can be traced to the root cause.
